ChatGPT Prompts for Social Media: Content That Actually Engages

Social media content is relentless. You need posts for multiple platforms, multiple times per week, and they all need to actually get engagement—not just exist.

I manage social media strategy for several clients, and honestly, AI has been a lifesaver for getting through the volume while keeping quality high. But here's the thing: the prompts matter. A lot.

These are the ones I use regularly—not theoretical examples, but actual prompts that produce content I can use with minimal editing.

    Platform-Specific Content

Every platform has its own rules. What kills it on LinkedIn falls flat on Instagram. These prompts are tuned for each platform's quirks.

    Instagram Posts

Create an Instagram post for my [BUSINESS TYPE].

Topic: [WHAT YOU WANT TO POST ABOUT]
    Goal: [AWARENESS/ENGAGEMENT/SALES]
    Brand voice: [DESCRIBE YOUR TONE]

    Provide:
    1. Caption with hook in first line (before 'more')
    2. Body with value or story (125-150 words)
    3. Clear call-to-action
    4. 20 relevant hashtags (mix of popular and niche)
    5. Image/carousel concept

    LinkedIn Posts

LinkedIn has its own aesthetic. The posts that work there have a particular rhythm—short lines, punchy insights, and a question at the end.

Write a LinkedIn post that will get engagement.

    Topic: [YOUR TOPIC]
    My role/industry: [DESCRIBE]
Target audience: [WHO YOU WANT TO REACH]

    Format: [STORY/OPINION/TIPS/QUESTION]

    Write it with:
    - Hook that stops scrolling (first line is crucial)
    - Line breaks for readability
    - Personal angle or experience
    - Insight that's actually useful
    - Question or CTA to drive comments
    - Keep under 1,300 characters

    Twitter/X Threads

Threads are where I've seen the best engagement recently. In my experience, the key is making each tweet work on its own while building toward a bigger point.

Create a Twitter thread about [TOPIC].

    My audience: [WHO FOLLOWS ME]
    Goal: [EDUCATE/ENGAGE/PROMOTE]
    My expertise: [WHAT QUALIFIES ME]

    Write a 7-10 tweet thread:
    - Tweet 1: Hook that creates curiosity
    - Tweets 2-8: One clear point each, easy to understand alone
    - Tweet 9: Summary or key takeaway
    - Tweet 10: CTA (follow, share, visit link)

Each tweet under 280 characters. Include thread connectors.

    TikTok Scripts

TikTok is all about that first three seconds. If you don't hook them immediately, they're gone.

Write a TikTok script about [TOPIC].

    Niche: [YOUR NICHE]
Target: [WHO YOU WANT TO REACH]
    Style: [EDUCATIONAL/ENTERTAINING/BOTH]
    Length: [15/30/60 SECONDS]

    Include:
    - Hook in first 3 seconds (crucial)
    - Script with timing notes
    - Text overlay suggestions
    - Sound/music style recommendation
    - Trending format to use if applicable
    - CTA at the end

    Content Strategy Prompts

Planning content in advance is the only way I stay sane. These prompts help me batch-create instead of scrambling every day.

    Weekly Content Calendar

Create a weekly social media content calendar for my [BUSINESS TYPE].

    Platforms I use: [LIST PLATFORMS]
Posting frequency: [HOW OFTEN PER PLATFORM]
Content pillars: [3-5 THEMES YOU COVER]
    Upcoming: [ANY EVENTS, LAUNCHES, HOLIDAYS]

    For each post suggest:
    - Platform
    - Content type (story, reel, carousel, text, etc.)
    - Topic/angle
    - Best posting time
    - Brief content notes

    Content Pillar Development

What actually works is having clear content pillars. Not every post needs to be groundbreaking—it needs to fit into a strategy.

Help me define content pillars for my [BRAND/PERSONAL] social media.

    What I do: [DESCRIBE]
    My audience: [WHO]
What I want to be known for: [POSITIONING]
    Competitors: [2-3 ACCOUNTS YOU ADMIRE]

    Suggest 5 content pillars with:
    - Pillar name
    - What it covers
    - Why it matters to my audience
    - Example content ideas (3-5 each)
    - How often to post from this pillar

    Engagement Boosters

Engagement isn't magic. It's design. These prompts help you create content specifically built to get saves, shares, and comments.

    Carousel Post Ideas

Carousels are my highest-performing format on Instagram. The key is slide 1 (the hook) and slide 10 (the CTA).

Create a 10-slide carousel post about [TOPIC].

    Platform: [INSTAGRAM/LINKEDIN]
    Goal: [SAVES/SHARES/COMMENTS]

    For each slide:
    - Headline (5-7 words max)
    - Key point
    - Design notes (visual elements to include)

Make slide 1 an irresistible hook. Make slide 10 a clear CTA. Middle slides should provide real value that people want to save.

    Engagement Questions

Here's the thing about engagement questions: they need to be easy to answer. High friction kills participation.

Generate 15 engagement-driving questions for my [NICHE] account.

    My audience: [DESCRIBE]
    Content themes: [LIST]

    Create questions that:
    - Are easy to answer (low friction)
    - Spark genuine conversation
    - People want to answer (makes them feel good)
    - Relate to my niche without being salesy

Mix: controversial opinions, this-or-that, fill-in-blank, personal experiences.

    Story Ideas

Stories are underrated for building connection. They're lower pressure than feed posts and feel more personal.

Create 7 days of Instagram Story ideas for my [BUSINESS TYPE].

    Goal: [BUILD CONNECTION/DRIVE SALES/INCREASE ENGAGEMENT]
    My personality: [DESCRIBE]

    For each day suggest:
    - Story sequence (how many slides)
    - What each slide shows
    - Interactive elements (polls, questions, quizzes)
    - Behind-the-scenes opportunities
    - How to reference main feed content

    Copywriting Prompts

The words matter. These prompts help you nail the copy—whether it's your bio or a single caption.

    Bio Optimization

Your bio is working 24/7. It should be earning its keep.

Write an optimized [PLATFORM] bio for me.

    What I do: [DESCRIBE]
    Who I help: [TARGET AUDIENCE]
Key differentiator: [WHAT MAKES ME UNIQUE]
CTA: [WHAT I WANT PEOPLE TO DO]

    Requirements:
    - [CHARACTER LIMIT FOR PLATFORM]
    - Include keywords for searchability
    - Communicate value immediately
    - Show personality
    - Clear call-to-action

Give me 3 options to choose from.

    Hook Generator

I probably spend more time on hooks than any other part of a post. The hook determines whether anyone sees the rest.

Generate 20 scroll-stopping hooks for [CONTENT TYPE] about [TOPIC].

    Platform: [WHERE IT'S GOING]
    My audience: [WHO]

    Mix these hook types:
    - Controversial opinion
    - Surprising statistic
    - Direct question
    - Bold claim
    - Story opener
    - Curiosity gap
    - Pattern interrupt

Each hook should make someone stop scrolling.

    Caption Templates

Templates sound boring but they're actually huge time-savers. Build a library and you can post faster without sacrificing quality.

Create 10 fill-in-the-blank caption templates for my [NICHE].

    I post about: [TOPICS]
    My tone: [DESCRIBE]
    My audience: [WHO]

Each template should be reusable for multiple posts. Include:
    - The template with [BLANKS] to fill
    - What type of content it works for
    - Example of it filled in

    Repurposing Content

One of the best things I tell clients: stop creating from scratch every time. Repurpose what's already working.

    Blog to Social

Repurpose this blog post into social media content:

[PASTE BLOG POST OR KEY POINTS]

    Create:
    1. Twitter thread (7-10 tweets)
    2. LinkedIn post
    3. Instagram carousel concept (10 slides)
    4. 5 standalone quote graphics
    5. 3 Story slides with key takeaways

Adapt the tone and format for each platform. Don't just copy—transform.

    Video to Text

If you've created a video, you've got content for weeks. This prompt pulls it all out.

Transform this video script into text-based social content:

[PASTE VIDEO SCRIPT OR KEY POINTS]

    Create:
    1. LinkedIn post version
    2. Twitter thread version
    3. Blog outline for long-form version
    4. Email newsletter version

Maintain the key message but optimize for reading vs. watching.

    Hashtag & Trend Strategy

    Hashtag Research

Hashtag strategy isn't sexy, but it's the difference between 50 views and 500.

Create a hashtag strategy for my [NICHE] Instagram account.

    My account size: [APPROXIMATE FOLLOWERS]
My content: [WHAT I POST ABOUT]
    My goals: [GROWTH/ENGAGEMENT/SALES]

    Provide:
    1. 10 high-volume hashtags (500K+ posts)
    2. 10 medium-volume (50K-500K posts)
    3. 10 niche-specific (under 50K posts)
    4. 5 branded hashtags to create/use
    5. Hashtag grouping strategy for different post types

Explain why you chose each category.

    Trend Application

Jumping on trends can work really well—or feel forced and cringe. This prompt helps you figure out which it'll be.

Help me apply this trending format to my brand:

    Trending format: [DESCRIBE THE TREND]
    My brand/niche: [WHAT I DO]
    My audience: [WHO FOLLOWS ME]
    My voice: [DESCRIBE TONE]

    Give me:
    1. How to adapt this trend to my content
    2. Script/copy for my version
    3. How to make it feel authentic, not forced
    4. Best timing for posting
    5. Warning signs this trend isn't right for me

    Analytics & Improvement

In my experience, most people post and forget. The best creators analyze and iterate.

    Post Analysis

Analyze why this post might have performed [WELL/POORLY]:

    Platform: [WHERE IT WAS POSTED]
    Post content: [PASTE OR DESCRIBE]
    Performance: [METRICS]
    My average performance: [TYPICAL METRICS]

    Consider:
    - Hook strength
    - Value provided
    - Timing
    - Visual appeal
    - CTA clarity
    - Audience relevance
    - Platform algorithm factors

Suggest 3 specific improvements for future posts.

What I've Learned Along the Way

Include your brand voice. "Casual and witty" vs "professional and authoritative" produces completely different content.

Specify the platform. LinkedIn and TikTok are different universes. A prompt that works for one fails for the other.

Give context about your audience. Demographics, pain points, what they engage with—all of this makes the output better.

Ask for options. Request 3-5 versions so you can pick the best one or combine elements.

Iterate. Your first output is a starting point. Follow up with refinements.
